Between Aura and Pain

Hi all,

Do any of you experience weirdness after your aura, but before the pain hits? I have found that I almost become "drunk" (for lack of a better term), or at the very least..LOOPY. I'm uncoordinated, like my fingers don't want to work quite right, my perception is off a bit etc. When I'm alone and I'm feeling this, it normally leads to panic attack. But if I'm with my fiance, it can be *almost* fun.

Not REALLY fun, but comical anyway.

Tonight I had a huge aura driving into town. Once there I took my drugs, and went off shopping (which was an interesting experience; couldn't make a decision, couldn't remember where I'd found something etc.), then off to eat. I returned to my table after a trip to the buffet, and realized the people next to me were chuckling. I had missed my table by one, heh.

Is it just me?

I've had confusion, dizziness, sudden sleepiness, and hearing wrong, distorted words and sounds. It's not fun; and it's even less fun when your family and/or employer all think you're exaggerating. Yuck.

Yea, I don't normally even talk about those feelings themselves, but people normally notice that I'm a bit "off". So I guess they've always believed me when I explain.

Your aura consisting of "hearing wrong, distorted words and sounds" is a rare type of acoustical illusion (i.e. disorted perception of acoustical stimuli), could you describe this phenomenon a bit more detailed (how long does it last? in which temporal relationship is it in respect to the headaches - before, during, after?), I would like to add your description to the symptoms listes at http://www.migraine-aura.org/EN/Auditory_symptoms.html

Yeah, I get that. It's usually what I'll have instead of an aura... It's like I'm drunk, but not. I've walked into tables, forgotten words, misplaced sandals, all that fun stuff.

It's part of the reason why I nearly had "migraines" engraved on my MedicAlert bracelet (I wear one for other reasons). I figure if I'm ever in public like that, I don't want to be arrested for public intoxication.

Yea, I guess it could be considered a part of my aura itself! Normally this confusion starts about 10-15 minutes after what I've always considered my aura, a moment of extreme dizziness, confusion, and the feeling as if I've been smacked upside the head (as if the room itself turns on edge).

After this I know...nonalcoholic drunkedness, then pain. I can usually stop the pain from happening if I take some drugs right after the initial onset.

What do you mean by your experience "as if the room itself turns on edge", do you have a change of visual perception of the room around you? or is it just a bodily feeling?

It's actually a bodily feeling, not visual at all, just as if someone came up from behind and whacked the side of my head. I have actually stumbled when this happens because I get an almost "faint" feeling when it happens, combined with a feeling of force of some sort.

It's not just you. I am LOOPY like that 75% of the time as a result of my migraines and my almost ever present aura. I've done the same thing shopping too, but not the restraunt thing. That's kinda cute though.

It's called the prodrome. Read the section on brain structure and function: http://www.abpi.org.uk/publications/publication_details/targetMigraine/section4a.asp

Hah, my students notice this. "You're getting a headache aren't you??" THey're so good--- the other teacher that teamed with me for math last year used to be like, "ok, take a little break, you just told the kids to do their work in the garage." My biggest issue is that I can't figure out how to complete sentences, or I think that I am talking right and the words come out all mixed up! IT's crazy.
